The Elder Ieronymos of Aegina
“[This work is…]the biography of the Elder Ieronymos the Cappadocian of Aegina, one of the two great Elders of the Jesus Prayer in the twentieth century in the land of Greece, the other being the Elder Joseph the Hesychast of the Holy Mountain. Both were very strong in the interior prayer of the heart. They were contemporaries and knew each other; from time to time they exchanged notes on their experiences of the Jesus Prayer. […]The Elder Ieronymos was a very amazing man, like one of the ancients, the great Desert Fathers. Wherever he lived—in his beloved Cappadocia, at the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist by the Jordan, which was his domicile during his prolonged pilgrimage in the Holy Land, in Constantinople where he served as deacon and preacher to his Cappadocian and Anatolian compatriots who were merchants, or in Aegina where he lived the last four decades of his life—he praised the Name of the Lord in the depth of his heart and mind in deep stillness. He perpetually stood in the ‘house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.’”
